description

Polish First Day Cover commemorating the first human space flight on April 12, 1961, signed by Yuri Gagarin in Cyrillic near the top center. The cachet shows Gagarin beaming upward in a stylized capsule beneath the heading "Człowiek w Kosmosie" — Man in Space. Two cancelled Polish commemorative stamps (40 and 60 groszy) sit in the postage section, postmarked April 27, 1961.

Gagarin's Vostok I mission made him the first human in space — 108 minutes, one full orbit, then a parachute descent from 23,000 feet. In the months that followed, he toured the Eastern Bloc and beyond on his "Peace Mission," visiting Poland officially from July 20–22, 1961. A landmark piece of Soviet space history with a bold, unmistakable signature.

Condition: Near fine vintage condition. Gentle toning and negligible cropping to bottom corners. Envelope unsealed with original glue intact verso. 6.25" x 4.375"
