description

A complete Soviet commemorative matchbox set marking the 1100th anniversary of Житомир (Zhytomyr), 884–1984. Roughly 30 boxes depict the city's landmarks and institutions: the Pedagogical Institute, Komsomol Stadium, Ukrainian Musical-Drama Theatre, Hotel Mikhailovgrad, the Chemical Fiber Factory, and the Memorial House-Museum of С.П. Королёв — Sergei Korolev, chief designer of the Soviet space program, who was born in Zhytomyr. Portrait boxes depict local figures including Shevchenko and Lenin. The presentation box lid carries the anniversary emblem; the inner lid shows a WWII memorial monument alongside the city coat of arms and a text history of Zhytomyr.

Korolev's birthplace museum appearing in a matchbox set produced the same year the USSR launched its last crewed Salyut mission is a small but precise collision of Soviet history — the man who put Gagarin in space, commemorated in cardboard, in the city where he was born.

Good vintage condition. Outer box shows light wear. Inner matchboxes intact with vivid printed labels. Full set present with matches.
