Soviet Dog Breed Matchbox Set

A complete Soviet collectible matchbox set — approximately 30 boxes, each printed with a breed portrait against a color-coded ground: yellow for hunting dogs, blue for service dogs. Breeds include Хортая борзая, Пойнтер, Бигль, Шотландский сеттер, Немецкая овчарка, Чёрный терьер, Среднеазиатская овчарка, Колли, and more. The outer presentation box opens like a book, with an introductory text and illustration on the left panel describing the role of working dogs in the Soviet military and civilian life, and the full set displayed in a grid on the right.

The two-color coding is functional — it categorizes the dogs by use, not just appearance — which is very Soviet in approach: even a collectible has to be organized along rational lines. The set was likely produced under ДОСААФ, the Soviet paramilitary volunteer organization that oversaw service dog training programs, which would explain the institutional framing of the text.
