description

A Soviet Чайка ladies' hunter-case watch — the dial hidden beneath a hinged enamel cover that flips open to reveal a white face with Arabic numerals, Чайка branding, and an engraved gold-tone bezel with floral scrollwork. The cover and four large bracelet links are painted in monochrome: grey, white, and black landscapes depicting palm trees, birds in flight, angular geometric forms — sails or peaks — and open sky, each panel set in a rope-twist silver-tone frame. The scenes read as a continuous composition across the bracelet. Made at the Uglich Watch Factory, 1970s–80s.

The hunter-case format — borrowed from 19th-century pocket watch tradition — was revived by Soviet watchmakers as a way to turn a modest mechanical movement into a decorative object. Hiding the dial behind a painted enamel cover transformed timekeeping into a small ritual. The monochrome palette here, unusual for Chaika's typically colorful enamel work, gives the piece a restrained, almost ink-wash quality.

Good vintage condition. Enamel panels intact with clear painted detail. Hinged cover opens and closes properly. Case shows light oxidation to silver-tone elements. Dial clean with legible branding. Recently serviced, running.
