Soviet Bestuzhev Brothers History Book

This is "Братья Бестужевы" (The Bestuzhev Brothers) by Natan Eidelman from the series "Страницы истории нашей Родины" (Pages of History of Our Motherland). The ornate cover features five Bestuzhev brothers in military uniforms, and inside depicts the December 1825 Decembrist uprising. The brothers were noble officers who led the failed revolt against Tsar Nicholas I.

The Decembrists became martyrs and inspiration for later Russian revolutionaries. Five leaders including Mikhail Bestuzhev-Ryumin were hanged in 1826, while others like Nikolay Bestuzhev were exiled to Siberia. This Soviet children's book celebrates them as proto-revolutionary heroes who fought autocracy and serfdom.
