A Slava (Слава) mechanical watch commemorating Perestroika, Gorbachev's reform program that reshaped the Soviet Union in its final years. The cream dial features a bold red star at 12 o'clock, "ПЕРЕСТРОЙКА" (Perestroika) in striking black letters, the Slava logo with "27 камней" (27 jewels), and small red stars marking the hours. A date window sits at 3 o'clock. The chrome case has a coin-edge bezel, paired with a newer black genuine leather strap (Metropolitan brand).
These commemorative watches emerged during the late 1980s glasnost era when Soviet factories began producing items that would have been unthinkable years earlier. The Slava factory in Moscow was one of the major Soviet watchmakers, and their 27-jewel movements were considered reliable workhorses. This piece captures a pivotal moment when the USSR was simultaneously celebrating reform and hurtling toward dissolution.
Good vintage condition. Case shows light wear. Crystal clear. Dial clean with vibrant printing. Movement runs (not tested for accuracy). Strap is a newer replacement. Sold as collector's item.
