description

An official protocol booklet issued for the state visit to the USSR of Mohammad Daoud Khan, Head of State and Prime Minister of the Republic of Afghanistan, June 1974. Bilingual Russian and Dari Persian, with the USSR state emblem embossed on both covers. The interior contains the delegation's Moscow accommodation assignments, telephone directories for the Afghan Embassy and Soviet Foreign Ministry departments, and a handwritten roster of delegation members with their room numbers at the Советская and Кремлин hotels.

Daoud had seized power in a bloodless coup just a year earlier, deposing his cousin King Zahir Shah and declaring Afghanistan a republic. He came to Moscow to court Soviet support while simultaneously pursuing aid from Iran and the United States. Four years later he was killed in the communist Saur Revolution. Five years after that, Soviet troops were in Kabul. This booklet documents one of the last moments of Afghan-Soviet diplomacy before everything collapsed.

Good vintage condition. Covers show light soiling. Interior pages clean with clear printed and handwritten entries throughout. All pages intact.
