This is issue #17 of Smena (Смена) from 1949, featuring a dramatic portrait of a young violinist on black background. The back displays the World Federation of Democratic Youth emblem with sheet music for the international student union anthem. Inside includes a full-page socialist realist painting depicting Soviet dock workers and maritime labor.
Smena was the Soviet Union's most popular youth magazine, published by Komsomol and reaching over 3 million copies by the 1980s. This 1949 issue balances high culture (classical music) with labor themes and international youth solidarity, typical of the post-war period's emphasis on both cultural refinement and working-class values.
Good vintage condition. Pages show age-appropriate yellowing. Light edge wear and minor creasing. All pages intact with vibrant color reproduction on interior art.
